Peasant Knowledge of Okeanos
Old sailors whisper Okeanos’ name in reverence or fear, knowing better than to offend the ancient god who lays claim on the vast oceans of Naam and everything in their dark depths.
Folk stories often speak of overconfident seafarers who failed to pay proper respects to the god of the sea and became forever lost under the waves. Thus, many common people avoid sailing, and those who must take to the seas often believe they are leaving their lives to the whims of Okeanos from the moment they step aboard a ship.
Scholar Knowledge of Okeanos
Sages who study the history of deities and devout theologians agree that Okeanos is one of the oldest warring gods still alive today. Patient, distant, and imperious, Okeanos rarely speaks to short-lived mortals directly unless they offend him gravely or obtain power he covets.
As treacherous and as unfathomable as the seas he commands, Okeanos merely tolerates the mortals who pray to him to sail on the waves he claims as his own, and he quickly sinks the ships of anyone foolish enough to disregard his power or harm his minions.
While the god of the sea commands the sea, he seeks to control the entire cosmos and his power extends beyond the vast oceans, manifesting in subtle ways across Naam. Scholars warn that many mortals who blasphemed against Okeanos and tried to escape his wrath away from the sea, found tragic death when they choked on a glass of water or drowned in a knee-deep puddle.
Apocryphal and Forbidden Knowledge of Okeanos
From the safety of his watery realm, Okeanos has watched the rise and fall of many would-be cosmic rulers, patiently amassing the dark secrets and the magic of gods that died in the deepest reaches of his oceans. One day, theosophists fear that Okeanos will unleash that power in a final bid to destroy the other warring gods and claim the world for himself.
However, heroes who braved Okeanos’ treacherous waves and lived to tell the tale know that the arrogance of the god of the sea can be used against him. An ancient being of unfathomable imperiousness and conceit, Okeanos believes that mortal creatures are insignificant compared to the endless sea, and he will often underestimate the power of his enemies and the conviction of mortals who seek to actively oppose his will.
