Alice Delmare is a bright eyed, young human Paladin of the Crown. Eager to prove herself to her queen and her noble mothers, the human Lady Lantana and the triton Lady Morwyn, she set off on an adventure to see the world.
Alice rode from her seaside home astride her fey summoned warhorse, Valor, in search of allies and those in need. Unexpectedly, it was Veursg the goblin prince of Gnagamore that needed her most. Town after town had been massacred by wild goblins of the mountains and demons from another plane. Prince Veursg traded away more and more of his soul for dark powers to protect his people and Alice did all she could to protect him and the city. At last, victory was hard-won at the gates of Gnagamore. And although deeply saddened by the death of his parents and countless subjects, Prince Veursg was crowned King.
Time went by and as the goblin city rebuilt and grew, its king grew pale and tired, feeling as though his very soul was being drawn out of him. He called upon Alice once more and together, they traveled to one of the Circles of Hell in order to retrieve Veursg’s pact book and somehow end his servitude to the dark forces. Book acquired, the pair fled back to the Material Plane only to realize that Benisur, a lord of Hell, would not so easily give up the soul owed to him. Pursued and haunted, they arrived at a freshly built town of Goblin Outpost where another siege broke out. Cut off from the bulk of the goblin forces, surrounded by an army of demons and fiends, amidst fire, death, and destruction, all hope seemed lost.
Face to face with one of the demonic lieutenants of Benisur, Alice fought bravely to defend her friend and his people, only to come up short against such monstrous evil. Just then, a light bright as the day shone amidst the battlefield, momentarily blinding the fiends, and buying Alice a moment of respite. A lithe figure emerged from the darkness, shining brightly, and introduced himself as Shane, a Life Cleric of Ilmater. Deep scars crisscrossed his otherwise young and handsome face, an eyepatch covering his left eye. The awkward way he handled things made it obvious his right hand was missing, although he wore a glove to hide it. A war meeting was held with all the allies present and the party concluded that as long as the pact book was in the world and Veursg was alive, the enemies would pour unlimited resources into hunting them.
With Shane’s healing abilities at their disposal, they hatched a risky plan. Alice would kill Veursg, and Shane would magically preserve the goblin king’s body. They would take the book and Veursg and ride for the City of God’s Rest, a place protected by divine magic. There they would not only be safe and behind city walls, but also would be able to find out how to hide the book and resurrect Veursg with the help of Shane’s clerical order. A decoy goblin king would be sent in opposite direction to buy them some time.
Thus decided and with a heavy heart, Alice ran her friend through with her sword, trusting to find salvation at the end of this dark journey. For days, Alice and Shane rode on through the forest, pursued by the enemy. At every corner, a new danger awaited. Demons and devils, invisible in the darkness, haunted their every step. The nights were spent riding through the woods with only a bare glimmer of light to guide their way, trying to preserve their magic and resources for when the enemy would inevitably catch up with them. At last, they stood in a clearing, exhausted and beaten, invisible enemies on all sides. Resolved to fight until the end, Alice trusts her new companion to heal her and have her back against the encroaching darkness.
