Character: Reverie, Tiefling Necromancer
Mere was born in the winter of 1489 DR, under the cold, harsh skies of Icewind Dale in the small settlement of Caer-Dineval. Her birth was not celebrated with joy and love, but rather with fear and revulsion, for Mere was a tiefling. Her human parents, unable to overcome their prejudice and fear, abandoned her to the merciless snow. It was the lord of Caer-Dineval, Crannoc Siever, who found her and brought her into his home, saving her from certain death.
Crannoc, however, was no saint. He constantly reminded Mere of the debt she owed him, asserting that she needed to atone for her "fiendish blood." He was not physically abusive, but his words were a different kind of cruelty. As Mere grew, Crannoc decided to marry her off to a Calashite shop owner from Lonelywood when she turned fourteen, all for a dowry of fifty gold pieces.
In 1502 DR, as the endless winter of Auril raged on, a group of Asmodeus worshippers seized control of Caer-Dineval. It was during this chaos that Mere's life would change drastically. A group of adventurers stormed the Caer and defeated the cultists. Among the adventurers was Halla, who, after learning of Mere's circumstances, offered her a new life.
Reluctantly, Mere agreed to serve this new master. But unlike Crannoc, Halla did not demand labor or submission. Instead, Mere found herself immersed in rigorous combat and magical training. Halla bestowed upon Mere a unique gift—immortality. Using ancient magics, she bound Mere's spirit so that a new body would materialize should she die.
Emboldened by her new status, Mere began to push the boundaries of her magical abilities, culminating in her casting a Netherese spell—Karsus's Avatar—targeting the spark of a dead god. Despite the destruction of her physical form, Halla's magic recreated her body, and the experiment was a success. Mere had attained a fragment of divinity, granting her an unprecedented level of power.
Eventually, Mere journeyed to Baldur's Gate. The city's bustling streets and cutthroat inhabitants overwhelmed her. She was robbed, losing all but her spellbook. Though she had the potential for godlike powers, she needed worshippers to tap into it, leaving her vulnerable.
After leaving the adventurers to seek her new life, she was left with only the clothes on her back, a spellbook, and a spell component pouch. Despite this, she managed to stay on good terms with her former rescuers and convinced one of them to hire out three goblins in their employee.
Because the goblins were so awed by her magic, which at the time amounted to little more than illusions and tricks, their reverence granted her power, allowing her to use her powers to protect and recall the goblins whenever they got into trouble. Because of this, she gained something of a reputation, and the goblin's sudden appearance and disappearance led the guards to believe she had a dozen or more working for her. Around this time, she adopted the virtue name Reverie, a common practice among tieflings when they try to find themselves in the world.
Her story took another turn when she met Urrai and Promise, two tiefling siblings. Together, they expanded their gang, with the goblins acting as their eyes and ears, keeping them safe. Today, their notoriety has grown to the point where they have a bounty of 500 gold pieces on their heads. But despite the odds, Mere remains undeterred, standing at the head of her gang, a beacon of awe-inspiring power in the murky underworld of Baldur's Gate.
