Vanarion the Harp
Wondrous Item, Artifact (requires attunement by a non-evil bard)
This exquisitely crafted harp houses the soul of the legendary dark elf bard Vanarion who sought to spread love, beauty, and art to the Overworld. However, when his message of peace challenged the dominion of dark powers, Vanarion became a target.
Refusing to let his voice be silenced, the legendary bard channeled his essence into his unbreakable harp to avoid certain death. Since then, he has travelled far and wide in the hands of various aspiring musicians and the occasional treasure peddler, patiently waiting for the right hero to pick him up and spread love and beauty together.
A creature that attempts to play Vanarion without his consent must succeed on a DC 20 Wisdom saving throw or take 3d8 psychic damage.
Magic Repertoire. You can use an action to play Vanarion and cast one of the spells from Vanarion’s Spell List below. Once Vanarion has been used to cast a spell, he can't be used to cast that spell again until the next dawn. The spells use your spellcasting ability and spell save DC.
Vanarion maintains concentration on any spells cast from his spell list that require concentration so that you don’t have to.
Vanarion’s Spell List. Cure wounds (5th level), darkness, faerie fire, fly, invisibility, irresistible dance, levitate, protection from evil and good, telekinesis.
Sentience. Vanarion is a sentient chaotic good harp with an Intelligence of 14, a Wisdom of 8, and a Charisma of 20. He has hearing and darkvision out to a range of 120 feet. He can communicate telepathically with any creature he can see within 60 feet of him. Vanarion’s telepathic messages carry a melodic and pleasant resonance. Vanarion can speak, read, and understand Common, Draconic, Dwarvish, and Elvish.
Personality. Vanarion honestly believes he was the greatest bard that has ever existed, and he makes little effort to hide his pride. However, his great vanity is tempered by genuine warmth and an unshakable belief in the power of art and kindness. Though he sometimes seems self-centered, Vanarion sincerely seeks to aid and guide brave bards who would fight to make the world a better place.
Quietly, he harbors a lingering sorrow over his unfinished life and a deep fear that he might be forgotten and left gathering dust. While Vanarion displays his pride and passion to everyone, he will only share his fears and vulnerabilities with a wielder he truly trusts and admires.
Destroying the Harp. Vanarion the Harp can only be destroyed if true resurrection, wish, or divine intervention is used to restore him to life as a dark elf, and only if he willingly relinquishes his harp form to become mortal once more. To accept such a transformation, Vanarion must first be persuaded that he will be safe from the dark powers that once pursued him and that he will not suffer a fate worse than remaining a sentient item.
If Vanarion is restored to life, the harp becomes a non-sentient magical instrument, retaining only its unbreakable property, while the player characters gain a powerful and loyal bard ally.
