Creature Spotlight: Gold Elemental
Boasting several rare properties and a striking color, gold is an unusual metal in the periodic table that has fascinated mortals through the ages. Found in its native state or alloyed with other useful (for mortals) metals, gold has long since been considered precious and used as money by many cultures, a fact that delights gold elementals.
Gold elementals are fully aware of the value mortals place on gold and often lean on it to receive care and adoration from those who hope to receive gold nugget as gifts. A particularly pleased gold elemental might point mortals towards a gold vein, but anyone who tries to take advantage of a gold elemental will earn nothing and may even lose any gold they might have amassed.
Gold is almost as shiny and almost as conductive as its group 11 sibling, silver, but it’s the most malleable and ductile element in the entire periodic table, able to be worked into extremely thin sheets. Even though it’s the softest metal, gold’s density is almost identical to the density of tungsten. Gold is also the second least reactive metal in existence after its neighbor, platinum. It will not rust or tarnish, and it does not react with oxygen and most acids even at high temperatures, though there exist extremely potent acid mixtures that can dissolve it.
Heavy, soft, and often sluggish, gold elementals are almost never interested in combat, and will usually prefer to retreat quietly instead of fighting. Almost all gold elementals refuse to serve as mounts and will only follow mortals who show them true affection and not just try to befriend them to get rich.
